Aotearoa New Zealand Online Meetup 42
[edit]- Date: Sunday 15 October 2023
- Time: midday to 2pm
- Location: Virtual Meeting at this link https://meet.jit.si/WikiAotearoa
IMPORTANT: The first person joining the meeting needs to sign in as the "Moderator" using a Google, Facebook, or GitHub account; other attendees can then join without any authentication - see the jitsi blog for more information.
NOTE: This video conferencing software link will ask permission to use your computer camera and microphone. You will need to agree to get full functionality. Google Chrome or Chromium is recommended for the best experience (not all aspects work correctly with other browsers). The Jitsi web-based video conferencing platform is 100% open source and fully encrypted. No account is needed and it's free. - Cost: Free
Meetup code of conduct and anonymity when meeting via video conference
[edit]All attendees are expected to understand and abide by the Universal Code of Conduct.
This video conferencing meetup is a replacement for an in-person meetup. While attending and remaining anonymous is supported by the group, lurking is not supported and will be actively discouraged. All attendees are expected to use their User name as an identifier on the video conference call and to introduce themselves and their interest in joining the call on the chat channel of the call as a minimum. Participation using video and / or voice in addition to Chat is encouraged but not required.
Some members of the group have been the target of cyber bullying in the past and these measures are intended to support creating a safe space for collaboration.
If a new attendee joins the group with video and voice disabled, they will be encouraged to participate by the facilitator, using this script:
- Welcome new attendee. This group respects your right to remain anonymous. This group has a policy of discouraging lurking as it makes some of us uncomfortable. If you are happy to introduce yourself over voice, please let us know what you've been working on and if you need help with any editing issues.
- If you're not comfortable updating the group by voice, then that's okay. You have the option of introducing yourself and adding your user page link into the chat feature. The chat is deleted once the video conference finishes.
- If you want to remain completely anonymous and not chat, then this meetup is not for you. We make comprehensive and extensive notes of the meetup that will be included in the meetup page afterwards. That's the best way to catch up with what this meetup has been doing if you don't want to contribute during the video call.
- If you're not sure how to use the chat feature you can access it by clicking on the icon that looks like a speech bubble in the bottom left corner.
If, after an appropriate length of time, the new attendee does not participate by video, voice, or chat, the facilitator of the group will remove the attendee from the video call.
If the new attendee persists in logging in, the group will discuss abandoning the meet up.
Chat for sharing pastes, URLs and so on
[edit]The Jitsi video conferencing platform has a chat feature. This is used to share URLs and other commentary while the discussions are occurring. The facilitators may take a copy to help with writing up outcomes from the meeting on the meeting Wikipedia page. Any copies will be deleted once outcomes and notes are completed.

Wikimedia User Group of Aotearoa New Zealand – update and discussion (15 minutes)
[edit]Update from President, WANZ
[edit]The WANZ Committee has been working on a number of initiatives.
- Dianne has started in her role as executive advisor.
- Website: getting the website sorted out - have engagde a designer, will be using Wordpress, expect the basic site to be available soon (before Christmas).
- Reports received back from Wikimania, including the Pacific contingent and staff from te Papa. Was a very good event, and great to see feedback and what they learnt.
Update from Treasurer, WANZ
[edit]- Our finances are in a good position, and we are keen to fund worthwhile activities and initiatives. If you have something that you would like to propose (e.g. venue hire, catering, travel to an event), please let us know. We may be able to help with funding.Marshelec (talk)
Wiki-Con Weekends, Editathons, Events and Outreach in 2023
[edit]If you're an event organiser, don't forget to add your event as a program to the Campaign Dashboard. The Dashboard is a key tracking tool for reporting back to Wikimedia Foundation and will help us ensure that we get funding in future years. If you are unsure how to add programs to the Campaign dashboard you can find further information here on how to create a new event dashboard and how to link it to the overall campaign dashboard. Alternatively contact: Ambrosia10 (talk) on her talk page for help.
- WikidataCon 2023 WikidataCon 2023 is open for registration. Virtual tickets are free. See this link to register.
- New Zealand Wikidata Thesis Project aims to get New Zealand dissertations into Wikidata. Project Page, Project Dashboard. There is a google spreadsheet of theses authors with Wikipedia pages who need their theses adding to their page if folk want to work on this during #1Lib1Ref.
- New information: Video on how to add thesis to people's pages has been completed.
- Project Contacts: DrThneed, Giantflightlessbirds and Ambrosia10
- 2023 Annual Wikidata Fellowship Grant One New Zealand and two Australian fellowships available. Applications opened on 9 January and closed on Sunday 26 February 2023. Check out the Annual Wikidata Fellowship Grant fellowship grant page for more details.
- 2023 August 16–19 Wikimania, Singapore and online
- Links to some Wikimania 2023 talks that participants in the August national online meeting found useful:
- User:Canley: Duplicating Everywhere All at Once (from 4:03) demonstrating the way he has developed to identify and merge duplicates caused by a bot in Ceb Wikipedia and subsequently Wikidata with incorrect coordinates.
- User:DrThneed: A Nation's Dissertations: The New Zealand Thesis Project (from 2:23:48)
- User:Diegodlh: Collaboratively fixing automatic citations in Wikipedia with Web2Cit (from 4:22.03) and Web2Cit for script and user instructions.
- Public Wikipedia Workshop (part of Heritage Festival, Dunedin) by DrThneed was planned for 8 October 2023. Disappointingly, no one who registered turned up. However, prizes purchased (Making Space) will be held for a future event. Discussed ideas for the future with the Heritage Festival organisers, including the talk series held monthly, so will look at doing a talk next year, and hopefully organise a third event.
- When: 8 October 2023
- Where: 201 Princes Street, Dunedin
- Topic: Women in New Zealand architecture
- The West Coast Wikipedian at Large project is running for a third time, until 20 October. You can sign up and see what needs doing on the project page, and keep track of progress here.
- Golden Bay Retreat, 10-11 February 2023. Will be held at the Collingwood School, following WANZ Committee meeting on the Friday.
- Other suggestions for themes around events include Library Week, Conservation Week, International Volunteers Day, 24hr editathon for Ada Lovelace Day, WikiSource Women's History Month for Wikisource, Winter Olympics, Matariki Event, Library Week. We should think about the focus of the work – is it to onboard folk or to focus on content. Any further update?
- Anything to update / discuss?
- Giantflightlessbirds was the successful candidate for the Wikipedian at Large for 2024. WIll be largely based in Christchurch, starting in January. Looking forward to working with the GLAM and Christchurch Wikipedian community.
- Ambrosia10 provided a verbal report back on the TDWG conference as required by funding. See the draft TDWG conference report for more information.
- Hocken has released their new online collection, called Snapshop. This has 15k more images and better indication of licensing.
- Wellington events: The Wellington group is in the process of organising and planning several events. Once these are finalised, they will let the wider community know.
Round table for participants
[edit]Opportunity to say what you’re working on and if you need help to do anything or want anything demonstrated. You can add requests for help here prior to the meeting if you want.
- Yvanyblog Has been addding photos to commons, mainly related to Christchurch - help required in putting into categories. Currently needs help with adding further citations and expanding the Polish New Zealanders article.
- @Yvanyblog:, I'd suggest adding some content from the Polish History New Zealand site, which I came across when I was researching Polish settlers at Jackson Bay. There are entire sections on early settlers and war refugees, it looks pretty good. —Giantflightlessbirds (talk) 09:48, 15 October 2023 (UTC)
- Architect event report - 3 articles created, 3.5k words , and 51 references
- LIANZA presentation comming up on Halloween in Christchurch with Deborah on the NZ Thesis Project
- Open Refine train the trainers course - accepted, need to train group before end of March (session at next Wiki meeting). Focusing on OpenRefine for Commons uploads.
- Election articles (including updating Wikidata items, e.g. from political candidates to elected, etc.) - final final count required (3rd November).
- Election Did You Know (DYK) - please help expand bios (list here) and get them ready, we want as many as possible, but definitely more than 19! Also if you DYK, then some QPQ credits would be great.
- Marshelec has spent a really enjoyable time with Mike on the West Coast providing support for improving content about the Fox Glacier (town) area, and Whataroa (including the Waitangiroto Nature Reserve – the only kōtuku breeding colony in New Zealand.
- Gertrude206 has done little editing recently, mainly copy editing. Had a fright one day when found was blocked from editing. The problem was caused by turning on iCloud Private Relay which blocks IP address. Apple users beware! Same thing will happen if you try using a VPN to edit.
- Panamitsu has created a few new articles and DYK nominations, such as Orange Guy for the election, Sealord Group, Independent Fisheries among others, and an article for the West Coast, Roberts Point Track which needs images.
- Robert
- Finalising article about forestry building in Hobart (with help from Annie/Marshal), reinvented itself: Forestry Building, Hobart
- Berief introduction: works in a GLAM institute in Sydney, catalogs, Wikidata (open to learning more).
- Oronsay worked on more of the NZ Thesis project - nice to come back to, including starting to recognise names of academics (particularly at Massey); maintenance work with constraints reports, including merging people; the usual bits and pieces elsewhere; work on new Fellows of the Royal Historical Society, Australia. Also assisted at the Superstars of STEM editathon in Sydney last Saturday, attended by only 1 participant of 9 registered. Plus the facilities manager was also there. Only worked on existing bios so no dramas!
- David Nind. Mainly worked on Wikisource.
- Prosperosity
- Getting Kapti Island to GA status (with Panamitsu).
- Question about what is a 'GA' for Wikidata - complete and as useful for Auckland.
- Auckland War Memorial Museum Summer Wikipedians selection for the Museum, acceptance letters sent out (hoping they all accept).
- Ambrosia10:
- Women genera project: just submitted paper for publication (method paper - how they did things), and the static dataset (improving that).
- Working on hidden figures and generating documentation for a university course.
- Presentation and slides for the TDWG 2023 conference - amazing conference. Conference report. Slides. The next conference is in Okinawa.
- Article: Stigmella (moth) (specias that relate to NZ).
- Over the next few weeks I'm working on my keynote at the Australian citizen science conference in the Sunshine Coast on 21 November.
- Giantflightlessbirds and contributors are working on the Development West Coast funded project (the weather has been terrible!). As announced, will be the Wikipedian at Large for six months in 2024, based in Christchurch (project page to come). Will be in Syndey for the next three weeks, and hopes to catch up with fellow Wikipedians there. Then attending GLAM Wiki 2023 in Uruguay. Back in Christchurch in mid-September.
Review of questions raised during round table
[edit]- Does anyone here have experience of accessing and using the NIWA National Climate Database? A user has been adding climate tables to multiple West Coast articles and citing the database. I would like to briefly verify, but it is unfamiliar (to say the least).Marshelec (talk) No one was familiar with this database.
- The Orange Guy: Discussed licensing of image as this was removed - it is trademarked/copyrighted by the New Zealand Government, and they would need release to use it under an open licence for reuse. May be able to use under US fair use rules.
- Macs and using iCloud Private Relay/VPNs: Using these can causes issues with accessing Wikipedia projects, see update above under Gertrude206.
- CiteQ and book chapters: There seems to be an issue and are now broken, for example with Shelly Park. Suggested that this is raised with Pigsonthewing.
Further discussion
[edit]- Meetup to work on Commons: Many of us have a back log of images to add to Commons. It may be useful at future events to set aside some time to work on uploading to Commons, or have a sepcific event for this. This could including sharing our processes and the tools we use (if any).
- Wikidata models - where to keep? Discussion about where to keep models created for projects and Wikidata work, such as the NZ Thesis project, model for research expeditions, notable trees (for Lincoln Uniersity commemorative trees), and other model items relevant for New Zealand. One way is to use the Cradle Tool. Another is document somewhere, including the project page (if you have one).
- GLAM-related Tutorials: lots of great GLAM Wikipedia-related presentations available on the Wikimedian in Residence - University of Edinburgh YouTube channel
- Christchurch - Beginner Workshops: Looking at holding running a workshop in Christchurch for training beginners - five week training programme with homework.
- Bulk uploading images to Commons: PattyPan is no longer being updated (again! it was updated for a brief time, but the latest update is March 2022). OpenRefine is now seems to be the main alternative, but the perceived complexity may put some people off using it, including the smaller GLAMS and those that don't want to learn OpenRefine basics. There was general agreement that the Wikimedia Foundation should ideally support an easy-to-use tool for non-specialists. Useful resource: Wikidata Lab XXXVII: Uploading images to Wikimedia Commons with OpenRefine. NOTE: DrThneed is aiming to run a session on this as part of the OpenRefine train the trainer programme.
- Commons Categories: General discussion about the categorising in Commons - not always intuitive or consistent. While there are no hard and fast rules, the main aim is to make them as findable as possible. Looking at other main centres may make sense, but may not be appropriate for smaller places. Also discussed some common situations, such as streets (would normally only have a category if it was a major street, such as Queen Street or Hobson Street in Auckland), people, and books (would normally have it's own category so you can add a Wikidata infobox). Hokitika may be a useful model for smaller places.
- Tool to assess article quality: ORES predicted quality displayed on Wikipedia pages is a user script that you can add to your common.js file - example (if you don't have a common.js page, create it). This is being replaced with Lift Wing? (There was a talk at Wikimania about this - very technical, rather than user focused.)
- Commons work - easy task: If anyone wants to work on some photos - many good photos are uploaded to general city categories (instead of suburb, building, or street categories). Some of these photos are much better than the ones used in articles, for example for Queen Street. Have a look at any of the city/town categories and see if you can find some good shots to categorise! Example: Dunedin.
- Presentation about Wikipedia and Wikicommons tools and gadgets: from the Wellington 2023 conference.
